A Three Channel Remote Sensing Approach Towards Crop Leaf Chlorophyll Estimation
نویسنده
چکیده
Chlorophyll mapping of vegetation by remote sensing band ratio algorithms has been one of the primary research aspects since its inception as it is the fundamental pigment which is responsible for photosynthesis in plants. A new three channel band ratio algorithm is proposed in the present research for the nondestructive measurement of crop chlorophyll content. The algorithm takes into account the spectral characteristics of three crop species grown across three seasons, along two of the cardinally related wavelength channels to vegetation dynamics including visible and near infrared of electromagnetic spectrum. The algorithm demonstrates a higher linear variation as well as sensitivity when compared to that of NDVI. Hence, the approach holds great future scope in the remote estimation of crop chlorophyll content which can be used for vegetation health mapping.

Remotely sensed data can be used to estimate crop type, amount and condition and such estimates, made at key points in the growing season can be used to predict the eventual crop yield. The launch of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on the Envisat satellite offers other approaches to the remote sensing of crop yield and these are explored in this paper. This sensor is now prov...

Green Leaf Area Index (GLAI) and Green Biomass (GBM) are two of the fundamental biophysical properties indicating vegetation physiological status. In the current research a new three channel normalized band ratio algorithm i.e. "Weighted Normalized Crop Index (WNCI)" is proposed for remote estimation of vegetation GLAI and GBM. WNCI takes into account three of the most common vegetation sensiti...

Canopy chlorophyll content (Chl) closely relates to plant photosynthetic capacity, nitrogen status and productivity. The goal of this study is to develop remote sensing techniques for accurate estimation of canopy Chl during the entire growing season without re-parameterization of algorithms for two contrasting crop species, maize and soybean. These two crops represent different biochemical mec...

Crop biomass is a critical variable for characterizing crop growth development, understanding dry matter partitioning, and predicting grain yield. Previous studies on the spectroscopic estimation of crop biomass focused on the use of various spectral indices based on chlorophyll absorption features and found that they often became saturated at high biomass levels. Given that crop biomass is com...

Recent studies have demonstrated the usefulness of optical indices from hyperspectral remote sensing in the assessment of vegetation biophysical variables both in forestry and agriculture. Those indices are, however, the combined response to variations of several vegetation and environmental properties, such as Leaf Area Index (LAI), leaf chlorophyll content, canopy shadows, and background soil...
